"The Swimmer" by ceramic artist, JoAnne Bedient is part of her Talking Heads series. It is handbuilt, which means it is not made on a potter's wheel, but by the slab method. It is raku fired, which is an old Japanese way of firing where the piece is lifted out of the kiln using 4-foot tongs while it is red hot and glowing.
As the air hits the glaze after removing it from the hot kiln, the glaze starts to shrink and crackle, then the piece is placed in a metal trash can with a combustible material (newspaper in this case). After the paper ignites, the lid is placed on the container to starve the oxygen, and the piece absorbs smoke into the crackles and any unglazed area which turns black.
Each piece is truly a one of a kind. "The Swimmer" is 5" tall, 5" deep, and 3" wide. $110 with free shipping.
